Food for flower‐visiting insects: Appreciating common native wild flowering plants
نویسندگان
چکیده
Native wild flowering plants provide important season-round nectar and pollen resources for flower-visiting insects, but many are unappreciated or even disliked by members of the public; example ivy (Hedera spp.), dandelion (Taraxacum officinale agg.) bramble (Rubus fruticosus agg.). This antipathy has received little research attention despite a pressing need societal shift towards greater awareness such recognition their ecological value. Engendering appreciation common wild-growing could greatly improve floral resource availability enhance biodiversity simultaneously benefit human physical mental well-being. However, there multiple challenges to changing public attitudes. Knowledge among is limited this phenomenon symptomatic diminishing connection nature. While species may be overlooked due lack knowledge, it evident that some ‘weeds’ actively unpopular. Reframing perceptions value achieved in several ways including through formal education, messaging media, businesses environmental organisations, encouraging participation urban land management. DNA Barcoding the Native Flowering Plants and Conifers of Wales
We present the first national DNA barcode resource that covers the native flowering plants and conifers for the nation of Wales (1143 species). Using the plant DNA barcode markers rbcL and matK, we have assembled 97.7% coverage for rbcL, 90.2% for matK, and a dual-locus barcode for 89.7% of the native Welsh flora. We have sampled multiple individuals for each species, resulting in 3304 rbcL and...
متن کاملSteroid signaling in plants and insects--common themes, different pathways.
Outside of mammals, two model systems have been the focus of intensive genetic studies aimed at defining the molecular mechanisms of steroid hormone action—the flowering plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, and the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Studies in Arabidopsis have benefited from a detailed description of the brassinosteroid (BR) biosynthetic pathway, allowing the effects of mutations to b...

متن کاملContamination of wild plants near neonicotinoid seed-treated crops, and implications for non-target insects.
Neonicotinoid insecticides are commonly-used as seed treatments on flowering crops such as oilseed rape. Their persistence and solubility in water increase the chances of environmental contamination via surface-runoff or drainage into areas adjacent to the crops. However, their uptake and fate into non-target vegetation remains poorly understood. In this study, we analysed samples of foliage co...

In the present work the authors report the result of their food ethnobotanical researches, which have been carried out in Sicily during the last thirty years. Data concerning 188 wild species used in the traditional Sicilian cuisine are reported. The authors underline those species that are partially or completely unknown for their culinary use and they illustrate other species that local inhab...
